Pop Up show Ideas
I have been adding layers to my "cloud" and it has become a bit heaver, because of this the starch was not as effective. It started to loose some of its shape and come apart. To over come this problem i tried stapling the fabric to see if it would give the sculpture the needed support, the staples did not hold well as the fabric is very thin. The only other thing i could think to do that would effectively secure the fabric in place and allow my to shape and mold the fabric was to sew it. I started sewing today and it is a very long and laborious process but i think in the end it will be worth it. I have added around 30 balloons of various sizes and about 10 meters of fabric. It is now the size of 1x0.5 meters. I think i might have to leave the top dark layer off and finish it inside the church as i am worried about being able to transport it to the Pop Up show. Also i think the shape is a little off i am trying to make it too symmetrical, i need to look at clouds and take note of the natural shapes that occur. Also it feel from where it was suspended in my room today, i need to make sure the fishing wire goes through as many layers as possible so that this will not happen again.

Cloud research
I have been looking in to storm clouds and the process of condensation that results in different formations of clouds. I like the fact that no two clouds are the same, that they are randomly generated forms. I also like the fact that they constantly change shape so that they become something different. I enjoyed researching freak cloud formations, ones that are not common, i think the fact that they are rare and can not be seen in everyday make them more beautiful. Also i like how even tho the cloud can have a shape and pattern they are still just a random occurrence in nature. My favorite type of cloud formation is called Undulatus Asperatus, the name translates roughly to roughened or agitated waves. They appear dark and storm like it looks like an ocean, i think the fact that the sky can form waves is beautiful it makes we feel like we are under water.

I think my sculpture is going to end up more cloud like through its use of materials, balloons and silk like fabric than through its shape. I am finding it quite hard to manipulate the fabric in to a natural like occurrence. I think i will have to also experiment with more fluid like substances, i think this will allow my sculpture to communicate the natural flow easier. I think maybe going back to wax and plaster would be a good idea as i have worked with those materials before and know how to manipulate them.

While looking at clouds i also saw lots of pictures of rain, i think it would be a really challenging and interesting  idea to try and capture rain in a sculptural, permanent form. I'm not sure yet how to do this but i like the idea of suspension again and maybe doing lots of little sculptures with lots of detail rather than one big one. Also i could build it so it has to be seen from the inside so the audience's view is manipulated. I really like this idea of manipulating the way people view things as it become more interactive and gets people more interested in it through this.

Project Proposal
Is my sculpture communicating the ephemeral, no it does not look like a movement in time, it dose not look like something frozen. I need to develop my work more, look at what is ephemeral and how to capture something about to change. I think i should look at materials in more depth, use materials that change and become something different. Also it is not uncanny, people would not be able to tell it is a cloud, the materials are not used in such a way that they become something else, and it does not communicate sublime as i do not think it is beautiful in any way.

Light show at the Hayward Gallery Southbank
I went to see the light show, Ann suggested it would be helpful for my work as there was a water installation.  I found the show really amazing, it was interactive and interest engaging. When we first walked in there was a giant light fountain, like a Chandler  I was made by Leo Villareals, called Cylinder 2, It featured lights that moved and were controlled by a computer program. The result was endless shapes and patterns being created, some say that the movement represents meteor showers of a cloud of swarming fire flies. I like the idea that it could be relating to something natural, how through a completed artificial way he has captured nature. I think his art did look like fireflies how the lights gathered and moved as it one. The artist explains that "the sequencing has no beginning, middle or end" he likes this as he believes that then this makes people feel that "they don't feel like your watching for something you've missed. I like the fact that the sequence is never repeated one a certain pattern has played out you can never see it again. I think this is interesting as then everyone gets to see something different. I also like how it was placed in a room centrally, it drew peoples attention and allowed people to experience it as a whole by having to walk around it. I think tho if it was hung in a dark room on its own with out any other light source it would of made more of an impact, the glass tubes that held the light would of become almost invisible.

I also found David Batchlor's Magic hour to be a really interesting piece, it added mystery and curiosity  He has arranges TV screens in to a shape with different unknown images displayed. The only thing you know about what is present on the screen is the color glow you can see around the edge. The effect is a kind of a multicolored halo. Batchelor wanted to represent the artificial light that is associated with a city. I also like the unintentional art of the way the wires are held and gathered behind the screens, they create loops and thick circles of pattern.

My favorite piece was Anthony McCall's, You and I, Horizontal(2005), it was art that you as the viewer could interact with. It made the art fun as you could manipulate the art and become part of it. It was amazing how as the pattern of light projected changed so did the audiences experience. The light created tunnels and walls that you could walk through and dunk under. I kept reaching out as if to touch the light, it looks so real. The patterns created where also really interesting, the room was filled with a fog, when this interacted with the light you could see swirls and pattern that would not of been able to experience with out the light.

The work by Olafur Eliasson i think is most helpful to my work. The work was an experimentation of light and perception. It distorted peoples view, disorientated them and made them question what they were seeing. He uses light to make it seem as if the art can freeze time, immobilize water. The splashes of water become hung in space, suspended in time. This is what i want to do with my work, i want it to communicate the ephemeral. I think it would be useful in my work to look in to using lights, and ways of experimenting with how lights can effect the work.

Thursday, 21 March 2013

I removed the balloons from my fabric sculpture, the fabric has set and taken on the desired shape. I like it more now that it has no props supporting it. Although i don't think that it successfully communicates movement. I think i need to build upon it and add more layers, i think this will give it more depth. I was think of using colors of clouds, like grey tones and some blues, i think this would make the work more obvious about it being some that captures the temporary. I also think that this would look at the notion of the uncanny, where something is familiar and yet foreign at the same time. I think the cloud colors would be recognizable but the exaggeration of fluid movements with in it would be mysteriousness and unknown. I have also been thinking a lot more about how to display my work. I think it would enhance my work if people looked at it from the underneath. This would mean this i would have to look in to ways of suspending the sculpture. One idea was to suspend it in the entrance by using fishing wire and the Windows but the ceiling in there is not high another to give a full effect of something falling and temporary. Now i am thinking of using the main hall, if i could use fishing wire and get it over one of the high beams i could suspend it to a great height. I think this would be more impressive and give the best view of my work. Although i might encounter some problems when it comes to getting it up there, i need to tie a weight on to the fishing wire and throw it over the beams.

I need to get more layers of fabric and different colours such as very light blue and grey with some hints of maybe black.  I also need to look in to how i am going to record peoples view, i want to ask people if they think it successfully communicates movement. This is a main issue of my work, i want it to be able to communicate the temporary something that has captured a moment in time.

John Martin(1789-1854)
Bets known for his work as a painter of religious subjects and fantastic compositions. He typically paints vast landscapes and artscapes. His images can be descried as larger than life, as they go throughout to depict heaven and hell, looking beyond the landscape. He looks a lot at judgement and biblical references. I felt for me john martins work really portrayed the sublime, it created a scene that people could experiments through looking.

My favourite piece by John Martin is called The Great Day of His Wrath(1851-3). The painting shows the destruction of Babylon and the material world by natural means. The use of colour and metaporasis gives the sense that nature is fighting its self, mountains collapsing and storms colliding. It is beautifully through his use of colour, his skill as a painter and the detail, it is also enlightening scary. A painting back in that day would of been the equivalent to a scary movie, it shows possible destruction of the world, a scary through. I think it will be interesting to trying to communicate the sublime through the sue of sculpture and not painting, will it change the impact of the work.

Alberto Seveso
Seveso looks at the pattern of ink in water, he use photography to capture the shapes created.I love the colours of his work, the bright ink against the White or black backgrounds make the image really stand out. I think the process of his art is really interesting, how he manages to capture these moments in time. I think the way he has developed the work is interesting as well, using the shapes of the ink created, replacing them with people and the human figure. I makes the body become something fluid and moving. The series of work i find most interesting of his are his ones called "chemical disaster" they use high speed photography to capture ink in water. The art work makes me think of movement and time, i know the materials are water and should not be suspended like this it makes it more interesting. I also like how it becomes something surreal at through the use of photography he has captured an every day event but in a way that our human eyes can not see. This makes it more mysterious and adds interest as it makes you think is that what water really looks like, how beautifully. The art work is called chemical disaster, i think this tells the audience that he is showing something surreal, something that has gone wrong and does not belong in this world.

Above are some examples of Seveso work, i like how he has experimented with mixing colors  his work becomes more surreal though this method. I also like how the shapes have become organic and can be representative of the human body. I want my sculptures to incorporate the unique natural shapes that Seveso has managed to capture in his work. I think the curving flow of his work shows movement effectively and it would be help full to incorporate these shapes in my work.

I think how the ink can look like a sculpture is really interesting  it has form and shape, it becomes something that people can reach out and experiences  I think his work would translate in to a sculpture, the folds of color  the tendrils of ink escaping at the top, it could be made out of clay or plastic. I also like how his work is deceptive, people do not know how big it is. As a large print i think it would have more effect, become something larger than ink something that confuses people, like a landscape almost.

I think this artist captures the ephemeral  it communicates the movement of water,is does everything that i set out to do in my project proposal  I need to now explore ways of doing this in a sculptural way. I also think that this work of art communicates the uncanny, it something familiar  it looks like fabric or ink, and yet it looks wrong, it manages to capture what the human eye does not.

Ink in water
I did an experiment with ink in water. I wanted to see if it was easier to capture than tea. I set up the camera on rapid shoot and dropped a small amount of ink slowly in to the water. It came out much clearer that the tea, the ink made interesting and unique shapes before settling to the bottom of the glass. I was really pleased with how the experiment worked out. I want to reenact thins experiment on a larger scale with different colours of ink. I also what to try different ways of dropping the ink in to the water, see and record what happens if i drop it from a height. I also think it would be interesting to mix the ink with different materials, such as dropping the ink in milk and mixing the ink with liquid latex. I am excited to see how these experiments turn out.
Above is an example of the ink in water photo shoot i did, i love the shapes that are present. Although next time i want to try and make the background a more block colour, so maybe experiment with different backgrounds. I could use blue and make out its the sea or the sky or just a very blank white. Also in the picture you can see the glass shadows i want to try and make sure next time these are not present by using a bigger tank. I think also i would be interesting to experiment with white ink and making the background black so it stands out a bit more. I also want to then develop thins in to natural elements, using dray tones to replicate clouds and storms.

Alisha Wasselr

I have been looking at the artist Alisha Wesselr, her "work revolves around a "propensity for detail." This propensity emerges in the accumulation of marks in her intricate pen and ink drawings and in the repetition of gestures in her sculptural installations." (taken from interview with he other peoples pixels blog) Her work looks at actions that she repeats over and over to make her work, a labourouse method of building up layers in her work and doing lots of detail. I was really drawn to Wesselr's fabric stalagmites and stalactites, i liked the detail of the work, the over whelming feeling it gave and the process of starching the fabric to make the work . There is two parts to here fabric installation, the interior where people walk in and the outside, a sculptural form that looks like a tail. "The cave entrance was built into a pre-existing archway, utilizing the unique architecture of the gallery space", i like that the art work incorporates the space, it makes it become part of the room like it is meant to be there and belongs. I like that the art work disoriented, it confuses them, they forget where they are because of how she has manipulated the space.

Wesselr found "the obsession with caves particularly interesting as they are naturally occurring sites of wonder but at the same time, humans have a history of altering them to make them even more fantastic." i like that she looks in to nature and the way people have manipulated it and learnt to control it. I think she looks at art as giving that over wehelming feeling of awe through beauty.

ST. Martins
I am currently starting to build up my fabric and starch sculpture. last night i was sure it was a disaster, the shape was wrong and the starch was not setting. This morning i found that it looked really cool and interesting, the fabric looks like it is frozen in time as it stays in the weird and wonderful shapes. I brought today some more taffeta fabric, some baby blue, white and a pinky grey. I think these colours will really make it look more cloud like and capture the temporary.

Berndnaut Smilde
Above is a photo of Smilde work, it is not photos shopped, he creates a real cloud inside. Through the use of temperature control and water he creates a real cloud that can be sustained in n indoor environment. He is interested in fleeting moments " the in between situations". He likes that his work means that people can not truly understand what they are seeing, questioning reality. I think his work communicates the notion of the uncanny, it looks familiar yet in this environment foreign  It confuses people, plays with materials and explores way of presenting work.

sketches of plan for St. Martins

I want it to be seen as if spiraling down, so that from underneath it would be gathered and have lots of shape to it. Also i think it would be easier to build it this way as gravity is going to pull it down as i only want to have one central point that it hangs from, to make it larger wider i would have to have more points from where it hangs. I think if i was hanging it lower down it would be easier to build it up but as i am having to hang it from a very high beam due to available space.

Wednesday, 20 March 2013

Last night I crumpled and then spray starched a small piece of fabric. I removed the clamp this morning and the fabric tho not completely still is staying in place. Now I know what to do I am going to do larger scale works. Although I think my choice of fabric was not that effective as I got a pretty netting, I think the starch would work more effectively on a more tightly weaves fabric such as cotton.  Today I need to go college shop buy un-bleached cotton and manipulate it in to a shape, maybe  through the use of other objects. I am then going to cover it in the spray starch and leave it over night. If it is successful in holding its shape I need to consider how I am going to display it at the church show next week.  Today I need to look at the images of the milk in tea experiment and my previously sketches as a plan for the shape I am going to manipulate the fabric in to.

The fabric starch worked well, it kept its shape and only took twenty four hours to set. I need to experiment to see what weight the fabric can take however as the starch is not as strong as i thought it would originally be. The shapes are also quite hard to manipulate, i am finding it hard to create complex forms that will hold in place. With the starch the shapes need to be quite simple.

In my project proposal i said i would explore the ephemeral, i think looking at clouds would be trying to capture the temporary. Clouds are always moving, a stationary cloud would be capturing that movement. I think sculptural, fabric is not very common, sculptures are usually associated with these great monuments that never move. I like the fact that i am taking a very flexible fabric and trying to force it in to a shape that will last. I also like that it tricks people, when people see fabric that expect it to be soft and movable, thought he use of spray starch i am changing it state. I think it would be interesting to look at the notion of the uncanny in reference to my ideas as this explores something foreign and familiar at the same time. I am not sure if this project will successfully create movement, i do not think it will work how i imagine it to. I will need to experiment and see if it does communicate this seance of time and if not how to change my work so that it does. It is a natural occurrence tho, i think it looks back at the theory of the sublime.

I was interested to see if my work could become sublime, i think throughout looking at nature, clouds i can further explore this theory. Clouds are beautifully and yet can become dangerous, can change and become storms and tornado's. It will be interesting to see how i develop this idea and see if i am success full in communicating this idea.

Dietrich Wegner "skin deep"
I came across Wegners art through searching for cloud art, I thought it would be interesting to look at cloud patterns to inform the shape of my work as well. Wegners art looks at unnatural clouds like atomic bombs. "Playhouse, by sculptor Dietrich Wegner, is a twenty-foot-tall tree house posing as an atomic mushroom cloud, representing the contradictions between “two conflicting ideas”." He looks at how his work can communicate safety, a childhood tree house, a sanctuary and yet at the same time danger and harm.

I found Wegner's work really interesting, i love the size and detail to which he makes his sculptures. His work to me also communicates movement through the shape and familiarity of it, i can see that it is a sculpture of a cloud, that can change and move. I found his sculptures really exciting and imaginative, they make you want to explore his work. I want my own work to be like this, i want it to be able to communicate the notion of something temporary like clouds and the movement of the natural. I also like the material he has used. I think it would be really interesting to experiment with wool and wire and see how easy it is to manipulate. I also like how it looks unstable and temporary as a sculpture with it having a smaller base than top, it looks structurally unsafe. I love the way his art combines and depicts mixed emotions, safe and dangerous  it invites people to explore it.

I think the size of the sculpture add to the work, it makes it more untouchable, it communicates the magnitude of the message he is trying to communicate. the conflict between the soft inviting materials and yet dangerous atomic shape brings an uneasy tension, making people drawn to his work more through the confusion he creates.

Wegners key themes that i think are communicated through his work are, childhood, thought the use of a tree house commonly associated with a place that children build to be free, have fun and feel safe above. protection, a soft cloud that encase a childhood home, high above from harm ad danger, untouchable. disasters, the shape of atomic explosion, something that deviates people and takes peoples lives. nature, clouds a common thing seen in the sky, just an every day common sense. sublime, how his work is beautifully and yet gives an over whelming sense of fear thought the shapes. How his work becomes apolitical and shows the end. uncanny, exploring conflicting emotions, looking at something that is normal with a foreign scene wrapped around it.

The notion of the uncanny

The “Uncanny”11
(1919)
SIGMUND FREUD

"Sigmund Freud introduced the concept of 'uncanny' aesthetic theory (the German word being Unheimlichkeit, which literally translates as 'un-home-like-ness'). Freud coined the word 'uncanny' to describe distinctive aesthetic experiences elicited by art works associated with certain feelings of mild distress, anxiety or disquiet.  Freud was looking at the uncanny in reference to how it can make people feel conflicted, give them that sense of something that is not quite right.

I read about a past exhibition about the uncanny and the unexpected called "The unnaturally strange". The exhibition looks in to materials and their meaning, the artists look at what "naturally" exists and manipulate materials to communicate their ideas. Included in the exhibition are artists who work with unlikely materials such as US dollar bills, a crocodile tail, car filler, slate, flies, feathers, fur, books, diamonds and sound, as well as time-honoured processes such as oil painting, gold leafing, watercolour and taxidermy The exhibition displayed work by Fiona Hall, John Lyall, Lisa Reihana and Pat Brassington, Michael Zavros and Peter Madden.

I think it would be interesting to look at the uncanny, my work is starting to explore this notion. I want my work to confuse people, to make them feel conflicted, a moment frozen. I like the idea of experimenting with materials, manipulating them in to something else. I think materials are also important in my work, i want to explore different methods of making and building up work.
ST. Martins church
we are displaying our work on Monday so i have been thinking more and more about what would be a suitable experiment to display. Today i brought some silk and spray starch and have done a large experiment  I hung the fabric form my ceiling and used balloons and clothe pegs to manipulate it in to shapes. i found it a lot harder than expected. The shapes do not look as fluid as i would of likes. I need to leave it over night to set but so far it looks like a sodden mess. I am no longer sure it would be a good idea to use this as my display experiment  i think maybe a combination of the fabric with cotton or other stuffing would be more successful  I think this would allow me to manipulate the fabric more easily and get a more correct shape. I need to now buy some wool or stuffing or see if we have any spare around the house. tomorrow i will get some cotton wool and some thread from the shop. Although maybe the starch will set on the fabric all right i cant imagine it at the moment with all the pegs and balloons inside it so i will have to wait and see.

New Idea
I am going to look at the artist Albert Seveso, i think it would be interesting to get inspiration from his ink in water art for the shapes i need to include in my sculpture.

I am really excited by this idea i think it will look really interesting though the use of everyday objects and the unique shapes crated, also this is a really easy method of creating and developing, it allows me to manipulate the shape more effectively. Although i think with the plastic bags and all the shapes combined it might be hard to make out the shape so when i have built the main body of the art i will experiment with ways of covering it more effectively and maybe look in to colors to help me communicate this feeling of movement. It has been two hours now and the fabric is starting t go hard, i am really excited to see it with out all the pegs in. I just need to be more patient with it and allow it to set.
I though i would do a little experiment with different types of tea, i use twinning fruit one, i though the milk going in to the different colors would look really cool and exciting. I learnt that milk curdles on contact with the tea and goes a disgusting think milk color. The picture was also really out of focus. I do not think that tea is a good way of capturing movement in water it is not showing up very effectively on the camera. I then decided to try and use the tea as ink, i set up a wet tea bag above a cup of water and photographed the tea as it splashed in the water. These photos i think came out a lot better and showed up more effectively.

I am really excited by these pictures and although the photo could be better and more focused i love the way it shows the movement in the water, how it has captured a moment in time.

Sketch Book
I wanted to do quicker drawings, ones that gave the sense of movement and tried to quickly capture the ink as it hit the water. I wanted to be less preciousness about these drawings just trying to communicate a sense of spreading and growth.

I like the unrefined quality of this drawing, the quickness and the hints to tone. I think that it captures ripples and the ink dispersing. I want my sculptures to have this kind of quality, a rawness to them, something that has been spur of the moment and not labored over. I think by doing this it has a spontaneous element that draws people in, makes people want to experience it. I prefer the drawings to the photos, they add mystery to the work, people can not be sure about what i have draw but with a photo the experiment it more black and white, more obvious  I want to experiment with this theme more through my work.

Idea
My work is trying to capture the ephemeral, it's trying to preserve the temporary in a sculptural way. To begin with I am going to look at moments in time, such as milk in tea and smoke, I am going to explore ways of capturing these moments. I think photography will be a good place to start as it will allow me to quickly capture the shapes and patterns created so that I can then translate them to a sculptural way. Also I need to start looking at what I am going to do for the show at st. martins church next week. I ideally want to suspend a sculptural piece that is an experiment although if the photos come out better I might consider displaying them instead. Last week I did an experiment in the studio where I filled a tank with black hot tea and filmed milk going in to it, the video came out crap and I was really disappointed with it. I need to think more carefully about the lighting and camera position next time. Also I think the tank was a bit too big and so it allowed the milk too much space to diverse. I also need to consider how I pour the milk in as it was too fast last time and there was too much milk so the photo came out too white. I am going to have another go with a smaller tank now and make sure I put in to practice what I learnt last time.

I did another version of milk going in to tea and I loved how the camera captured the pictures although when I viewed them on the computer the picture were really blurry. I think they came out better than last time but I need to do it again and see if they come out to a better quilts. I also think they would look good displayed in a flip book so if I can take the photos better i will try this.
above are some of the photos from the shoot i did. I need to crop them and edit them slightly but i really like how they develop through the photos. I think i may also give film another try as it would capture the movement effectively  i need to take a closer look at the images and the shapes created. I think it would be helpful if i did some drawings of the shapes and patterns also. I brought some expanding foam today and some fabric, this week i want to experiment with the expanding foam and if i could create a sculpture form this medium.

Reflection of tea and milk experiment
I like the shapes and forms that are created through the process of combining the tea and milk. The natural shapes that occur look unique and cloud like. It is important in my work to have an element of no control as for my this adds a sense of mystery and curiosity  I also think the method is important the ritualistic way of pouring the milk slowly and letting it settle in to a particular form or shape.

I also think combination is a really aspect of work for me, the way the milk would not exist in this form without the support of the water. It shows how things react and change each other, i find this interesting as it adds a sense of no control with my work. I have a general idea how the liquids will react but i have no control over the shapes and patterns that our going to be created this adds curiosity to my work and makes it engage interest more for me.I also like the idea that many people over look the reaction of adding milk to tea, it is a process that thousands of people do every morning, they over look the beauty of it as it is just an everyday occurrence. I like the fact that my work immortalises this everyday thing, it shows that it is beautiful  I love the way there is a form created out of this liquid, it looks to me like a solid shape that can be grabbed a hold of and examined.

My photos of this experiment however are not of good quality, there are blurry and the colour contrast does not stand out enough. The background has too much going on i need to try and edit them or shoot them better.

Referring back to my project proposal, this experiment does explore the ephemeral. Thought the use of photograph the images capture the temporary shapes and movement of the milk in tea. The photos capture a moment in time, it is

ST. Martins church show
I want to show at ST. Martins an experimental piece, i have been thinking of using a material that i could sculpt and trying to manipulate it to the shape of the milk in tea as the above photo shows. I want to see peoples reactions and get their thoughts on if they though it looked like something that captured the temporary. The materials that immediately spring to mind so far are, plaster, starched fabric, expanding foam and clay. I want my sculpture to be light so that it can be placed easily and if possible suspended like how the milk in the tea is temporally suspended. The one that excites me most at the moment and that i think would be really interesting to have a go at would be the starch fabric. I was inspired to look in to double starch thought the advert by Neha Deshmukh, an art director(http://www.nehadeshmukh.com/Double-Starch). It shows cloths that look like someone is wearing them but they are not. It looks really cool how the starch has managed to capture the human body, it gives the cloths a life of there own.

Above is a photo of the advert still. I think the shapes and lines created in this work are really effective they give the impression of human presence. I like how the image is deceptive and adds mystery, it is fabric and yet it is a sculpture it does not look quite right. i think the process is really interesting how it takes a day for the starch to set and make the fabric rigid, i like how it develops and changes. As an advert i think it is really effective, it shows how effective the product is in a creative way. I also like how the work is displayed, it looks well though out, in a natural home environment, a not distracting background, it makes the work even more effective. The art work makes me laugh  it makes me think that someone has hooked them selves on a coat hook, my mind keeps trying to place someone in side of the clothes. I want to try and recreate this effect on the cloths, the elaborate shapes and sculptural like quality's  I want to try and scrunch fabric up at first and see if the shapes with be captured. If this works i plan to try and be a bit more ambitious and find ways of creating the desired shapes such as placing it over a balloon and spray starching it.

Critical Reflection of Neha Deshmuck photography
The photo looks like an everyday scene at first glance, the hung up bag then tie, when you come to the cloths that where i found i smiled. The way the shape of a human is distinguishable  the creases and arch of the back, the bend at the knees  it looks like a magic trick the invisible man. It confuses me, i want to know how it is done, what it feels like, are they real cloths. I want to create this mystery with my own work, i want to be able to create this magic through my manipulation of materials.

Drawing from direct observation of ink it water
I thought it would be useful to my research to look at the shapes created by ink in water in the moments when the ink has not yet dispersed and is suspended  I drew what the shapes that i found most present, using lots of curves and fabric like folds, trying to capture the movement in my drawing.

Above is a scan of my finished drawing, i was really please with how it turned out. I think the shapes show the movement and form. I think next time tho i need to try quicker drawings so that i get first impressions of the movement. I want to take inspiration from the shapes in my drawing, my sculptures need to have this flowing quality to them. I did not add color as it is not important to my work, i think color distracts from the form, it can make the art something else all together  I want to keep my drawings colorless ad i want my sculptures to just be about the materials.

The sublime
The dictionary definition of the sublime is "producing an over whelming sense of awe or other high emotion by being vast or grand and or of a very great excellence or beauty. A high degree of moral or spiritual purity or excellence." When you break the work down it becomes sub-bliminal below consciousness or perception, just out of our understanding. In art i think this refers to how something can make someone feel an emotion even if they do not understand it consciously. A lot of artists who look at the sublime use lots of bright colours and natural elements. The Latin translation is something that is "set or raised aloft, high up". Having the quality of such greatness, magnitude or intensity, that our senses are over whelmed.

Edmund Burks, A philosophical enquiry in to the origin of our ideas of the sublime and beauty (1757). He detailed sublime, focusing on such terms as darkness, obscurity, vastness, loudness and sadness. Our reaction is defined by a kind of pleasurable terror. During the 18th and 19th century the sublime was associated in particular with the immensity of the turbulence of nature and humans response to it. Represented through towering mountain ranges, deep casims, violent storms or seas. Other artists have interpreted the sublime through apocalyptic art, senses that are life threatening and supernatural I want to look at the sublime as i think beauty might play a part in my work, as i do think the way it looks is important. I want my work to go beyond beauty become something that represents deeper emotions and i believe through looking in to the sublime it will help me.
