I removed the balloons from my fabric sculpture, the fabric has set and taken on the desired shape. I like it more now that it has no props supporting it. Although i don't think that it successfully communicates movement. I think i need to build upon it and add more layers, i think this will give it more depth. I was think of using colors of clouds, like grey tones and some blues, i think this would make the work more obvious about it being some that captures the temporary. I also think that this would look at the notion of the uncanny, where something is familiar and yet foreign at the same time. I think the cloud colors would be recognizable but the exaggeration of fluid movements with in it would be mysteriousness and unknown. I have also been thinking a lot more about how to display my work. I think it would enhance my work if people looked at it from the underneath. This would mean this i would have to look in to ways of suspending the sculpture. One idea was to suspend it in the entrance by using fishing wire and the Windows but the ceiling in there is not high another to give a full effect of something falling and temporary. Now i am thinking of using the main hall, if i could use fishing wire and get it over one of the high beams i could suspend it to a great height. I think this would be more impressive and give the best view of my work. Although i might encounter some problems when it comes to getting it up there, i need to tie a weight on to the fishing wire and throw it over the beams.

I need to get more layers of fabric and different colours such as very light blue and grey with some hints of maybe black.  I also need to look in to how i am going to record peoples view, i want to ask people if they think it successfully communicates movement. This is a main issue of my work, i want it to be able to communicate the temporary something that has captured a moment in time.

John Martin(1789-1854)
Bets known for his work as a painter of religious subjects and fantastic compositions. He typically paints vast landscapes and artscapes. His images can be descried as larger than life, as they go throughout to depict heaven and hell, looking beyond the landscape. He looks a lot at judgement and biblical references. I felt for me john martins work really portrayed the sublime, it created a scene that people could experiments through looking.

My favourite piece by John Martin is called The Great Day of His Wrath(1851-3). The painting shows the destruction of Babylon and the material world by natural means. The use of colour and metaporasis gives the sense that nature is fighting its self, mountains collapsing and storms colliding. It is beautifully through his use of colour, his skill as a painter and the detail, it is also enlightening scary. A painting back in that day would of been the equivalent to a scary movie, it shows possible destruction of the world, a scary through. I think it will be interesting to trying to communicate the sublime through the sue of sculpture and not painting, will it change the impact of the work.

Alberto Seveso
Seveso looks at the pattern of ink in water, he use photography to capture the shapes created.I love the colours of his work, the bright ink against the White or black backgrounds make the image really stand out. I think the process of his art is really interesting, how he manages to capture these moments in time. I think the way he has developed the work is interesting as well, using the shapes of the ink created, replacing them with people and the human figure. I makes the body become something fluid and moving. The series of work i find most interesting of his are his ones called "chemical disaster" they use high speed photography to capture ink in water. The art work makes me think of movement and time, i know the materials are water and should not be suspended like this it makes it more interesting. I also like how it becomes something surreal at through the use of photography he has captured an every day event but in a way that our human eyes can not see. This makes it more mysterious and adds interest as it makes you think is that what water really looks like, how beautifully. The art work is called chemical disaster, i think this tells the audience that he is showing something surreal, something that has gone wrong and does not belong in this world.

Above are some examples of Seveso work, i like how he has experimented with mixing colors  his work becomes more surreal though this method. I also like how the shapes have become organic and can be representative of the human body. I want my sculptures to incorporate the unique natural shapes that Seveso has managed to capture in his work. I think the curving flow of his work shows movement effectively and it would be help full to incorporate these shapes in my work.

I think how the ink can look like a sculpture is really interesting  it has form and shape, it becomes something that people can reach out and experiences  I think his work would translate in to a sculpture, the folds of color  the tendrils of ink escaping at the top, it could be made out of clay or plastic. I also like how his work is deceptive, people do not know how big it is. As a large print i think it would have more effect, become something larger than ink something that confuses people, like a landscape almost.

I think this artist captures the ephemeral  it communicates the movement of water,is does everything that i set out to do in my project proposal  I need to now explore ways of doing this in a sculptural way. I also think that this work of art communicates the uncanny, it something familiar  it looks like fabric or ink, and yet it looks wrong, it manages to capture what the human eye does not.

Ink in water
I did an experiment with ink in water. I wanted to see if it was easier to capture than tea. I set up the camera on rapid shoot and dropped a small amount of ink slowly in to the water. It came out much clearer that the tea, the ink made interesting and unique shapes before settling to the bottom of the glass. I was really pleased with how the experiment worked out. I want to reenact thins experiment on a larger scale with different colours of ink. I also what to try different ways of dropping the ink in to the water, see and record what happens if i drop it from a height. I also think it would be interesting to mix the ink with different materials, such as dropping the ink in milk and mixing the ink with liquid latex. I am excited to see how these experiments turn out.
Above is an example of the ink in water photo shoot i did, i love the shapes that are present. Although next time i want to try and make the background a more block colour, so maybe experiment with different backgrounds. I could use blue and make out its the sea or the sky or just a very blank white. Also in the picture you can see the glass shadows i want to try and make sure next time these are not present by using a bigger tank. I think also i would be interesting to experiment with white ink and making the background black so it stands out a bit more. I also want to then develop thins in to natural elements, using dray tones to replicate clouds and storms.

Alisha Wasselr

I have been looking at the artist Alisha Wesselr, her "work revolves around a "propensity for detail." This propensity emerges in the accumulation of marks in her intricate pen and ink drawings and in the repetition of gestures in her sculptural installations." (taken from interview with he other peoples pixels blog) Her work looks at actions that she repeats over and over to make her work, a labourouse method of building up layers in her work and doing lots of detail. I was really drawn to Wesselr's fabric stalagmites and stalactites, i liked the detail of the work, the over whelming feeling it gave and the process of starching the fabric to make the work . There is two parts to here fabric installation, the interior where people walk in and the outside, a sculptural form that looks like a tail. "The cave entrance was built into a pre-existing archway, utilizing the unique architecture of the gallery space", i like that the art work incorporates the space, it makes it become part of the room like it is meant to be there and belongs. I like that the art work disoriented, it confuses them, they forget where they are because of how she has manipulated the space.

Wesselr found "the obsession with caves particularly interesting as they are naturally occurring sites of wonder but at the same time, humans have a history of altering them to make them even more fantastic." i like that she looks in to nature and the way people have manipulated it and learnt to control it. I think she looks at art as giving that over wehelming feeling of awe through beauty.

ST. Martins
I am currently starting to build up my fabric and starch sculpture. last night i was sure it was a disaster, the shape was wrong and the starch was not setting. This morning i found that it looked really cool and interesting, the fabric looks like it is frozen in time as it stays in the weird and wonderful shapes. I brought today some more taffeta fabric, some baby blue, white and a pinky grey. I think these colours will really make it look more cloud like and capture the temporary.

Berndnaut Smilde
Above is a photo of Smilde work, it is not photos shopped, he creates a real cloud inside. Through the use of temperature control and water he creates a real cloud that can be sustained in n indoor environment. He is interested in fleeting moments " the in between situations". He likes that his work means that people can not truly understand what they are seeing, questioning reality. I think his work communicates the notion of the uncanny, it looks familiar yet in this environment foreign  It confuses people, plays with materials and explores way of presenting work.

sketches of plan for St. Martins

I want it to be seen as if spiraling down, so that from underneath it would be gathered and have lots of shape to it. Also i think it would be easier to build it this way as gravity is going to pull it down as i only want to have one central point that it hangs from, to make it larger wider i would have to have more points from where it hangs. I think if i was hanging it lower down it would be easier to build it up but as i am having to hang it from a very high beam due to available space.
