over the half term i did not journal much but today i talked to Claire and she says that i need to really start experimenting and documenting my work more. Also i need to review how the pop up show at the church went and look in to what photos i want to put forward for the one wall exhibit. The materials i am thinking of experimenting with is glue, wax and plastics. Also maybe other liquids in water and seeing how they react.

Pop up show review
The pop up show was a disaster for me, i created a "cloud" out of fabric starching and balloons. The fabric starch did not hold the fabric in place at all and it went really flat and so did not add any of the shape or body that i had intended for the sculpture to have. This then led me to add balloons to it as i thought it would add to the shape. It looked a mess, it did not look like a cloud and the shapes were not what i had intended. I think i should of kept the scale down and made it smaller so that i could of added detail. Also i don't think fabric is the way to go for me,i don't think i am going to develop anything more with this material as i found it really hard to work with and to manipulate. I don't think there was anything i liked about my work in the pop up show, the placement of it was poor, i did not manage to centre it, it was not the right height and people could not look up at it. I think now i want to look at other elements or moments in time. I have been thinking of looking instead at smoke and rain.

This one wall
Today i applied for the this one wall exhibit, its a wall in the middle of Colchester that has eight frames on it, they are open for four of our class and so i thought it would be interesting to apply. I think also it would be good to see peoples reactions that don't take art and are of all ages, i can see if the moment and the temporariness of my work is successfully conveyed. I did a series of photo graphs of ink going in to water and photographed it in various stages. I personally thought that the purple ink images were more successfully as they were in really good focus and captured all the detail. When i talked to Matias he prepared my ink images that had lots of different colours and were it was hard to tell what the image was of. I like the idea that people question that the photo is of but i don't think that is important to my work now. It is more about conveying to people moment and change. This is why i think the purple ink as it changes and disperser's would be more success full. I am not sure yet if it will need an explanation like a short paragraph in one of the frames or if this will give away the meaning i was aiming for.

These are my latest photos of ink in water, i found them so much more successfully than the previous experiments. I used a different type of ink, i thinker, deeper coloured one. I do like the way the ink has reacted with the colours, although i find the single coloured ink photos to be stronger. I think the combination colours are beautiful in a way, they become something more than just ink in water, they become something foreign  However i think the purple single coloured ink photos capture the dispersing of the ink, the change in shape and pattern, i think they are more success full at communicating a moment in time.

From the images above i think the purple ones are defiantly stronger, they are bolder, the deep purple is a greater contract and think will then stand out more. Also the wall they are going on it very colour full and has lots going on in the background so if i was to use the colourful ones i think it would distract and not stand out enough for my liking. Also i think the way the purple is documented how through the use of the photographs people can then see that is was a moment.

Yasuaki Onishi
When i talked to Claire she mentioned an artist who i found really interesting.  Yasuaki Onishi “Reverse Volume” Installations, he uses glue and plastic to create these amazingly detailed sculptures. I like how his sculptures suggest meant and landscapes, also the way that he has suspended his work. I am really interested in having my work above eye level as i like how it will force the viewer to change their perspective. Also i think it Will be interesting how it manipulates people, make them look in a different way.  The elements of movement are prominent in his work. As he uses such fragile materials, his work is constantly changing and moving. His sculptures although they look solid and firm are only made out of plastic sheeting, string and black glue. I think it is amazing how he creates such large scale work out of such delicate materials. I think it would be interesting to work with glue, as it is more associated with just combining materials and so to have a sculpture built out of it would look really interesting.  Also i was thinking that if i was to use a clear glue it would look like ice and dripped frozen water. I think this would show moments in time that have become frozen and would convey what i am trying to say easily.

Current ideas
I started to play around with the hot glue gun, i found building it up on tracing paper or baking paper was not good as it stuck to it. I then went on you tube and watched a clip of someone building up a glue sculpture and she said to stick it to either glass or metal as it is easy to peal off. I tried this and found that it did work. I stated to look at rain and thought about creating a sheet of glue with lots of pattern in it. When i had finished this i found that it was really hard to see all the detail and the gaps so the rain like effect could not be seen. This is when i had an idea to build the glue sculpture around a light so that when it was in a dark room the light would only shine out of the holes and gaps creating beautifully shadows. I  really liked this idea as it would emerse the viewer or audience in the shadows making them part of the art, it would also convey my ideas of communicating the temporary better as the shadows are only temporary depending on the light.

I did a small version of this and found it looked really cool and i loved how the light shone through, although the light was not bright enough to cast shadow so i would need to use a different light next time. I also do not like the light that i used as it changes colour and i found this did not reflect a realistic atmosphere. I think it would better if i was to use a white or blue light. This then led me to think of a bike light and i really liked how you can see the light to flash, it made it more disorientating and make it more interesting as it changed. It made me thing of the light show i went to at the Haywood gallery and so i think it would be really interesting to experiment with different lights.

Today i talked to Matias and he suggested to go bigger in my work, he did like the glue sculptures tho. He also said that in my work i need to focus on the jump between my small detailed sculptures and crap big ones.He says that when my work goes bigger it looses some of the interesting detail the small sculptures have. I think this is because i think the detail need to get bigger and i don't add as much depth to my work. I am going to focus on this and make sure i do not get distracted and as easily give up on my work. Matias also had the idea of using tube florescent lighting, cold lighting he called it.

I also had the idea while in the car to use the hot glue gun to trace the rain on the windows. I thought this would be really interesting how it runs down the window and merges and creates unique patterns. I want to do this on the large french windows in my living room, so that i can peal it off and have like a sheet of glue, i would then be able to use like a fabric. I could manipulate it easier and cut it to what ever shape i wanted. I could also then drape it over the tube lighting.

I feel like the hot glue would referred my project proposal better, it would show the impermanence of liquids, hot glue changes state from something liquid to solid, i think it would be interesting to experiment with this. I am not sure how successful this idea would be at communicating the uncanny, would it look like rain, would it look at using materials in a different way so as to confuse the viewer.

Above is a sketch of my current hot glue idea. I thought i could have multiple light bulbs hanging from the ceiling  with hot glue encasing them in a thin spider web like sheet. I thought about looking in to shadows, seeing how they can affect the work and change the space. Also i think multiple lights would be more effect more than one, as when they combine they become something else and react to each other.
