I think i am going to experiment with paint, i watched a you tube clip about an american artist who uses paint to make sculptures. I think it is interesting to use the materials in different ways and see what they can create. Also i think acrylic paint, as it is fast drying would be easy to manipulate just like the hot glue. I could look at rain again or another temporary element and use the paint to directly draw. I think i am going to use white paint as i think it would be able to communicate my idea or elements and purity thought this, i might also experiment with light again to create the temporary.
Project Proposal
I have been looking back over the project proposal that i wrote last month. I said i wanted to develop my sculptural skills more, i think i have been doing this and that i need to maybe look at ways of building up more more. I think if i look more closely at ways of constructing work it will make it easier to make my work larger and keep the detail at the same time. My project proposal was all about capturing the temporary, immortalizing time. I think my cloud that i did for the pop up show looked a bit at making a sculpture based on something temporary but it did not successfully communicate this to others. Also i think the choice of colors was poor for the experiment as my work is not about color it is more about form so i think i should look more in to color theory. Also i think i need to look at what is temporary, i am interested a lot in the elements, i should research more in to what kind of worldly changes can i successfully document. I said in my brief that i would look at lynda Benglis in detail for help with my research, i have not yet done this so i need to critically analyse her work in more detail. The notion of the uncanny, i was interested about this theory before i started the project and so i wanted to explore it in more detail and look at how and if my work would be able to communicate this. I thought it would be a good theory to go hand in hand with the temporary as people are familiar with events such as rain but rain in a sculpture form would look frozen and foreign I need to experiment with different ways of trying to show this theory. I said that i would experiment with plaster, expanding foam and wax, so far i have not experimented with any of these materials, i need to start to experiment a lot more as it will give me more research to base my ideas on. I said i would experiment with photography, i have done this but i need to evaluate how it went and what information i gained form this experiment.
Experimenting with paint
I am going to look over the work i did photographing ink in water and take inspiration for the shapes created. I thought if i was to print some of the images i could then place a layer of grease proof paper over the top and spread paint where directed. I am hoping that when the paint dries i will be able to peal the paint off and use it like a fabric as i have done with the hot glue. I do not think it will be as strong as the hot glue so i do not intend of building large installation like work with it just small experiments. So i just did an experiment with paint and i hate it. The ink photos have so much shadows and detail and the paint just does't show this well at all. Maybe i could paint on something else. I could paint on a light bulb ? or make one of those spinning story lights with cut out images. I think painting on a light bulb or touch would be really interesting. Especially a torch as it would then be portable art. I could experiment with shining it on to different surfaces, it would look interesting in the little installation space in the computer room as it is light tight. I need to get a torch and other light sources maybe?? I could use a pen instead or paint on the torch as it would be thinner and easier to add detail. I don't think paint it a good material to use, but i might try to use the sheet of paint one it is dried in a different way. I just tried to peal the sheet of paint of the grease proof paper and it did not work, i think i got it wrong and she used baking paper. I will need to redo the experiment.
Margie Livingston
I was looking through artists on tumbler and came across Livingston's art. She uses paint to create her two and three dimension art. I was partially interested in the way she used the paint in an unusual manner. To create her three dimensional work she layers acrylic paint on to baking paper. It is a long and patient process where she has to wait for each layer to dry. I think her earlier work where she creates these sheets of paint that she rolls and cuts in to various shapes is really interesting. I log of paint is very unusually and i think the way that she uses the medium in an unexpected way adds a sense of awe.
